Sleeping Bag

From Bloomington, Indiana, Sleeping Bag presents a 1990s alternative rock sound reminiscent of acts like The Pixies, Built To Spill and Weezer. Dave Segedy, who is the main songwriter, takes drums and vocal duties live, while David Woodruff and Lewis Rogers fill in on guitar and bass. Their sound relies on tight, catchy, and simplistic melodies paired with Segedy's fun, relatable lyrics delivered in a soft and reserved manner. Sleeping Bag is set to play alongside the likes of Ty Segall, Beach Fossils, and The War on Drugs during this year's WIUX Culture Shock, an annual free festival of sorts that happens in the spring. Culture Shock is put on by WIUX, the college radio station here at Indiana University. Click the bandcamp link above for streams of a few tracks that will eventually be made available through a full length. I also encourage you to try to catch any of the number of shows they have been playing lately.

Mike Adams At His Honest Weight - Oscillate Wisely (1/25/11)

I had the great pleasure of attending the release show for Oscillate Wisely, an album fully written and recorded by Bloomington, IN artist and musical figure Mike Adams. Oscillate brings to the listener a dreamy collection of groovy, slow pop tracks with heartfelt lyrics and a sense of sincerity that is becoming far too absent in music. It is being released by local label Flannelgraph (whom also released the OF 7" by Osteoferocious) in conjunction with St. Ives Records.

Check out the video for the single taken from the album, a track called "I'm Not Worried":

Feral Children

Feral Children are a Seattle-based band that incorporates woodland folk rock sounds with synthesizer-drunk backdrops. Their newest record, Brand New Blood, was produced by Scott Colburn, who also produced Feels by Animal Collective. After discovering them I decided to do some research and people are throwing around some pretty intense comparisons. One person on last.fm wrote "Take old-school Modest Mouse vocals, add in some Wolf Parade and Animal Collective for good measure, and you have Feral Children." While I don't totally agree with that statement, I don't totally disagree, either. I'll let you be the judge. I am particularly fond of "Second To The Last Frontier" over "Brand New Blood" so far. Thus, I would suggest starting at the beginning.

Surfer Blood

Astro Coast
Pre-Order
These guys are super fun indie/surf rock from Florida. Saw them play with a bunch of hardcore bands, which was odd, but they were well received. I encourage you guys to get this album when it is re-released in January on Kanine. This is their self-produced cut.

MAY-GAPOST

Foreword: This was all written approximately six weeks ago. Thus the month pun title. I'm pretty sure I never posted it because I thought I'd get around to writing descriptions for the rest of the albums. Obviously I didn't -- until now (somewhat). Anyway, I'm leaving in the "jokes" at the beginning because I am convinced that I am "so goddamn funny".

Get it? I'd hope so, idiot. [/dwightschrute]

So yeah, second post in a row like this. Might become the standard, as far as I'm concerned. Are you concerned? Don't be. There is nothing to be concerned about. Except SWINE FLU, AMIRITE? [/topical]

This week (not to imply that I will be doing this every week) I've got nine super-hip Rock 'n' Roll albums from various corners of the world! But really, they're probably all American. Which is probably for the best!! [/xenophobe]

Japandroids - Post-Nothing - (Myspace)
All I have to say is,

Wet Hair - Dream - (Myspace)
Two dudes who formerly participated in the epic psych forest adventure band, Raccoo-oo-oon. They obviously currently reside in a bathroom, their heads in the sink, passed out and probably hallucinating. GET IT??

Little Kingdoms - The Willow EP - (Myspace)
American Football-y, Kinsella-esque. Young dudes. F'in Rad is a funky track. The rest is great too. I can't remember, but I might have put a "bonus" song in the zip.

Pterodactyl - Worldwild - (Myspace)
When I first started listening to this I came up with the following catchy descriptor: "Animal Collective meets Drive Like Jehu". I still haven't come up with anything better.

Real Estate - Atlantic City Expressway Tour CD-R - (Myspace)
Cool, lo-fi midtempo island indie jams. Guy from Ducktails is on guitar. Sweet driving tunage.

Pocahaunted - Live @ Ms. Bea's (SXSW) - (Myspace)
Quality's as good as your average Pocahaunted recording, but nothing else here is "average" Pocahaunted -- for one thing, there's way more jam than drone. This three-song set of brand new stuff is total groove central. Groove Central, I say!

Duck Duck Goose - Noise, Noise, and More Noise - (Myspace)
Every so often, a band really innovates the shit out of their genre -- nowadays, for a hardcore band, this means they have just enough imagination to make the music actually interesting. If you're like me, and you wish not all bands in the hardcore scene sounded awful and boring, go for this.

El Grupo Nuevo de Omar Rodriguez Lopez - Cryptomnesia - (Myspace)
This album was recorded right after Mars Volta's Amputechture, and it's the most solid material Omar has released since Deloused. Don't get me wrong, I'm always a fan, but many of his solo albums are rife with filler. Maybe Zach Hill's labyrinthine drumming helped flesh this one out a bit. That's right, I said Zach Hill. Didn't you know? Get this now.

Shearwater

Quiet and strong rock music from Jonathan Meiburg and his friends. Jonathan used to play in Okkervil River. He really likes birds. The technical term for this curiosity is "ornithologist."

"What is Tsushimamire?? 'TsuShi' is bass player Yayoi's Second name! 'Ma' is Guitar and Vocal's Mari's 'Ma.' 'Mi' is Drum player Mizue's 'Mi.' 'MaMiRe' means 'Mix' in Japanese! 'TsuShiMaMiRe' is our original word! We try to make our original music and stage!!!"

Holy Fuck

Holy Fuck's name describes the reaction I have whenever I hear their music. They are from Canada and they have a very unique spin on their genre. In their Wikipedia page's words;

"The band uses live instrumentation and miscellaneous instruments and non-instruments (including a 35 mm film sequencer, toy keyboards and toy phaser guns) to achieve electronic-sounding effects without the use of laptops or programmed backing tracks."

They improvise on a lot of songs live. This is gonna be kinda confusing because both albums are named "Holy Fuck", but the first is their debut album, with the second being their most recent.
