Best Coast

Myspace

Remember Pocahaunted? How you couldn't go two months in 2008 without finding out they were releasing something new? And then it all stopped for some reason? And then Bethany started writing songs with a heavy 60's pop influence and recording them in the sunny California heat with the lo-fi haze of her former band? And how it was really awesome? I forgive you if your memory of this isn't as strong as mine, because for me it just happened yesterday.

Dark Dark Dark - The Snow Magic (2008)

Dark Dark Dark is a lovely little gypsy folk band. And I really only say gypsy folk because they use a lot of accordion. They're from Minnesota. There's also banjo. They sound a bit like a wonderful group of musicians called Bowerbirds.

The label doesn't want you to download the album from here. Sorry!

This Is It and I Am It and You Are It and So Is That and He Is It and She Is It and It Is It and That Is That(2008) .mp3, mediafire

ETA: KRS is really good at killing my links.

I'm not sure what to say about this woman except that she's an incredibly talented guitarist and the new album is intense. Zach Hill worked with her on the album and if you liked his solo album, you'll like her work as well. She's touring with Gang Gang Dance - go see her if she's coming to your town.

Crass were a largely influential Anarcho-punk band that delved in other genres, such as Classical, Noise, and Spoken Word. Here are all of their studio albums and both their live albums. I also added the Merry Crassmas 7", which is their cheeky little satire of Christmas consumerism. Enjoy!

Valet - Naked Acid (2008)

This is one woman named Honey Owens. She used to play in Jackie-O Motherfucker and now she plays bass on tour with Atlas Sound. This album is Naked Acid and sounds very similar to what that phrase may connote.

Rings - Black Habit (2008)

Friends of Animal Collective; includes Avey's sister doing some vocals and keys; Kria Brekkan recorded it. Little children playing in a dark forest with mythical creatures that may not hold themselves to the utmost moral standard. I secretly hope this metaphor has not been used several hundred times before.

Evangelista - Hello, Voyager (2008)

It would be silly of me to try to describe this album or Carla Bozulich and her band with any accuracy or insight. All I can say is, Well, it's kind of dark and chilling, but has incredible energy, and I guess it's genre-jumping and more unclassifiable and just brilliant than anything else.
And I know you get nothing out of that, so just trust and download it, yeah?

Black Tambourine - Complete Recordings (1999)

This band was around for a very brief period of time, not even long enough to release a full album. This is a compilation of singles and demos recorded in the late 80's. They were very much ahead of their time.

EDIT 4/4/10 :: LINK UPDATED. should work now.
