Octaves - Greener Pastures

I stumbled upon these guys the other day and was instantly charmed by their list of influences, which included such greats as pg. 99. Their music didn't fail to deliver. Though obviously influenced by such bands as Dillinger, La Dispute, and The Chariot, Octaves still has their own sound, and it's a fantastic sound devoid of pussy singing and tacky sweeps.

From what I can tell, Octaves seems to be yet another tragically unrecognized band. I can see no reason that they don't have more than 304 listeners on last.fm.

Hey, sorry about the lack of posting, school/babes/shows distracting me.

But hey, I owe you music.

Here you go, fresh out of Scandinavia.

The guy on throats reminds me of a cross between mid-at.the.drive.in Cedric Bixler and Jordan Blilie (actually, they used to play with the Blood Brothers), but don't worry, this is no rip-off act.

Oh, and don't be put off by the screamo tag. I think non-screamo fans could potentially fall very hard for this album if they'd give themselves a chance.

Drive Like Jehu

Drive Like Jehu were from San Diego. They were the first attempt that John Reis (Rocket From The Crypt! and Hot Snakes) took at making music. I prefer Drive Like Jehu to his other more notable projects. I love the sound they have. It's sludgy, almost akin to Melvins, but has a math-rock and post-hardcore feel to it, too. Some of their riffs almost remind me of Dinosaur Jr. as well. Check them out.

Russian mathy hardcore.

The screams are high and pretty intense, and the music is gloriously chaotic. i've run some of the lyrics through translators (speaking russian is, sadly, not in my skill set). the first repeated lyric i ran through was: "you will be taken with the ground"

not bad, right?

right now their album isn't for sale in the states, sadly, but they're looking for a us/europe label so that they can get here.

Svenonius described Nation of Ulysses performances as "an extraordinary freak-out kind of thing [...] really masochistic, lots of blood [...] cacophonous, and violent, and aggressive."

And that is an accurate quote. The man broke his arm and leg and suffered concussions.

The Sound Of Animals Fighting - The Ocean And The Sun (2008)

They've gone back to the stripped-down lineup that performed on Tiger & The Duke, minus a few members. They retain a little bit of the experimentation that made Lover, The Lord Has Left Us so intolerable to some, but it is toned down. Despite similarities one may draw between the three records, they are all unique beasts. This beast is slower, at first, than one might expect. This beast builds up and breaks down and is always heavy but not always hunting. As always, worth a listen.

This band just released a new album called Census, but I would feel terrible if I were the one leaking it. I mean, I've never done that before. Regardless, I feel that I must promote them anyway, so here's their first EP, which is just as good. It'll remind you of At The Drive-In, or some other such band, except the angular guitar riffs are smooth and groovily jazzalicious (dig?), as opposed to being dissonant and distorted. Sometimes they actually execute both simultaneously.

In any case, there are four tracks from the album Census streaming on MYSPACE for you to check out. If you dig it enough, consider purchasing the record. There are only five-hundred pressed, and the packaging is pretty sweet, so it's definitely worth it.

On the other hand, I might consider uploading the new album if enough people download this EP. So there's a little incentive to spread this around, I guess.
